You cant make great coffee without great brewing equipment. I have tried almost every way to make coffee and these are some of my favorites. From simple and easy to pure elegant these methods will make sure those precious beans get into your cup to enjoy.

I have personally used all of these and have had great experiences with them. I hope you find them really useful for great coffee too.

Autodrip

The staple of the modern office. A convenient coffee maker that is set it and forget it until its time to get drinking! I routinely use an autodrip out of convenience to not have to stand in the kitchen and do a pour over. Depending on your budget you can easily find everything from a basic brewer to a fully automatic self brewing and grinding Skynet level monster. Personally I like to go simple and just have it brew coffee. I don’t recommend the grinder brewers as they generally just really do neither thing really well.

Aeropress

The Aeropress is my favorite brewing method for individual cups of coffee! Its a great way to brew a single cup, completely tailored to your taste that is super easy to clean. Also one of the best ways for making exceptional coffee in the office as well due to its non breakable easy to clean design. Just fill, pour water in, plunge and push out the spent grounds. Great for camping too as its so light and compact!

Percolator

Ah the percolator, another very steampunk looking gadget that makes awesome coffee on the stove or in the camp fire.  My small five cup percolator has survived many campfires and charcoal grill brews.

The percolator is also an old style coffee maker predating the autodrip by about 150 years. Invented as alternative to tea and beer, it allowed easy brewing of coffee for its stimulating effects.

Chemex

The Chemex is my latest brewing technology and also one of my favorites. I have consistently found it makes the generally the best coffee.  I really like it because it filters exceptionally well and leaves the coffee smooth.

For those that somehow have not discovered the Chemex yet, it is really just a conical filter in a fancy glass carafe.  But the magic is in the filters because as the story goes a chemist came up with the idea for Chemex with his knowledge of chemical extractions and processing.  One thing I didn’t realize was how old this invention is though as it was invented in 1941!

French Press

If the Chemex and the Percolator had a baby it would be the French press.  Is this the best coffee maker for you? Well maybe, purist argue it gives you the best and truest flavor.  Haters say it gives you a over extracted cup with a fine soot of grounds in every cup. I think the merits are great flavor extraction, no waiting for it to drip though as you fill it all at once, very aesthetic, as well as many are fully metal and glass eliminating plastic contacting the brewing water. I’m not overly concerned about that but if I can brew great coffee and have no plastic touching my brew thats a bonus!
